Magical Transformation: Creating the Ultimate Multigenerational Playroom
Our client’s brief for this project was to transform a room that was being used as a home gym into a magical playroom for their two granddaughters. A wish list was given to us which included a slide (suitable for both children and adults), designated craft and reading areas, a bespoke dolls house and, a pampering and dressing up area. Another major requirement was to include plenty of storage space and, very importantly, provide an area to position their special and much-loved rocking horse.
Creative Corners: Bespoke Dolls House & Craft Sanctuary
An inspirational craft area was created with designated storage for materials together with cosy and inviting reading areas designed to stimulate and encourage reading either alone or with others. Also, a beautiful bespoke dolls house was made to very specific requirements including lots of room and, carefully curated furniture and accessories.
The design and build of a playhouse was our most creative and innovative feature of the room. It was constructed on two levels creating two distinctive areas and maximising space. We faced a number of challenges as several factors had to be taken into consideration including varying ceiling heights. Padded arched panels were installed for leaning against, a space for sleeping and, some clever storage solutions were included. The playhouse also incorporates the all-important slide…pink in colour and spiral in design.
Designed for the Future: Growing with the Children
Another major consideration and, something of importance to both the client and ourselves, was to create a space which would take into account future needs as the girls grow up and, can be adapted to be age appropriate and evolve with them.
Sustainability and re-purposing were also key factors. The majority of materials throughout can be recycled, upcycled and reused. Approximately 95% of the paint used was water based, many of the fabrics made from recycled products and, the expertly crafted cabinetry made from sustainable materials.
The playroom was also designed with safety in mind, from the angle of the slide, the stairs leading to the second level of the playhouse, the varying heights and construction itself, taking into consideration any possible dangers and risk factors.
Our client is delighted with the end result, as are we! The many activities and different areas the room offers create an environment which is user friendly, fun, stimulating, creative and, will provide a sense of wellbeing and social development. A safe place to play where the children can express their creativity, explore endless possibilities and let their imagination flow. It is hoped that a more organic way of play and spending their time and energy will reduce the amount of screen time on various devices.
